BESU Ties Up with Metalogic Systems for Improving Rural Healthcare

Bengal Engineering and Science University-Shibpur (BESU) and Metalogic Systems, a Kolkata-based software firm, has started the first industry-academia collaborative research project for applications in rural healthcare through the innovative use of mobile phone-interfaced devices.

The partnership is expected to greatly reduce the cost of ultrasonography by generating
preliminary medical data for doctors to determine the course of treatment. The first industry-academia partnership centre called Metalogic-BESU Software Innovation and Design Centre is being set up for the purpose at the University premises. BESU has also set up a Centre for Healthcare Services Technology and a Sponsored Research Consultancy Cell to spearhead research activities.
Though BESU has recently received funds to the tune Rs 25 crores for research and development (R&D), much of it is through the grants-in-aid from the government and its various agencies. Metalogic Systems is one of the first private firms to come forward to fund collaborative research projects with BESU.
"A new horizon has been opened up in teaching, learning and research related to Information Technology. Metalogic Systems has been one of the first private companies to sign an MOU with us for carrying out research projects that would evangelize the spread and use of healthcare applications like ultrasonography to the masses in rural areas at 2 to 3 per cent of the
current costs. We are hopeful that this unique project will open the doors for more such industry-academia partnerships in R&D. Some big industry houses have evinced interest in the Metalogic Systems-BESU model and are talking to us for similar tie ups," said Dr Ajoy Ray, Vice Chancellor, BESU.
"We are glad to associate with BESU for this unique project that is based on a low cost high volume lab-to-the-field model. It involves developing devices that would transmit ultra sound signals and images through mobile phones. This would have a wide impact on the rural healthcare sector through its cost effectiveness and innovation, besides having a strong commercial viability. We are currently in talks with BESU for similar research-based pilot projects in some other areas as well," said Arup Dasgupta, Managing Director, Metalogic Systems. Besides this transmission of ultra sound signals and images, Metalogic Systems-BESU joint research projects include pilot projects for bacterial detection in human isolates with mobile interface and special training programmes for students in Electronics, Electrical, IT and Computer Science.
