Hooghly IT Industry Grows Slowly But SteadilyPosted Saturday, September 08, 2007 By Mukul SarkarHooghly, a small town that lies west to the Hooghly River is among the important district of West Bengal. The town is famous for its various industrial units like rice milling and rubber goods. And, now the city is also stepping towards IT Industry. Speaking to itVARnews, Proprietor, Pyber Media House, Sudiptmitro Roy said, “Presently, the IT market is in its infancy in the region. It is experiencing a growth rate of 20-30 percent. Various leading brands have recently entered into the market. The growth is very slow as compared to other developed cities of West Bengal. The dealers in the region are putting all their efforts to increase sales.” The detailed analysis of the IT market in the city revealed that the brands like HP Compaq, Lenovo and HCL are among the most sought after brands. The demand of laptops is growing here as compared to desktops. Elucidating more about it, Director, Raj Computers, Rajiv Kamarkar said, “Presently, the sale of laptops is high in the market. Lenovo laptops are more popular in Hooghly. One of the main reasons for this phenomenon growth is the astoundingly reduced price and stylish look of notebooks. People are more and more opting for these mobile devices in place of desktops, as they are easily available in the market.” The main target segments in Hooghly are SOHO and few other industries. Although technology is spreading its wings in the region but the prevalence and demand of lifestyle products is almost negligible here. Products like MP3 and MP4 players etc. are not very popular, with a least demand. However, the lifestyle accessories like pen drives, cordless mouse etc. is gaining some popularity. But the city is facing major problems related to service support. On the same issue, Proprietor, Digital World, Sudipta Ghosh, said, “The major issue which we are facing in the market is related to service support. For even a minor problem, we have to depend upon Kolkata, which is very far from this place. Even there is no authorized service center of any of the leading brands in Hooghly.” Another issue that is creating hurdle in the growth of the IT industry here is lack of awareness among people about the various IT products in the market. Due to this reason lifestyle product like MP3 players, Pen drives are not able to make their place. The dealers are expecting few road shows in the region for consumer awareness. |
