Hitachi drives are hot with Taiwan notebook makers

Hitachi has emerged as the leading hard-drive supplier to many of Taiwan’s notebook OEMs and ODMs -- including industry leaders Asustek and Quanta among others -- whose total shipments represent the majority share of the worldwide notebook market. For more than a decade, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has been supplying hard disk drives to the world’s leading manufacturers of notebook computers based in Taiwan.

According to the Market Intelligence Center (MIC) of Taiwan’s Institute for Information Industry, notebook computer sales are expected to reach 54.88 million units globally in 2005. MIC also predicts that Taiwanese manufacturers will produce more than 70 percent of the total notebook output this year. Due to Hitachi’s strong relationships with Taiwanese manufacturers, the vast majority of notebooks produced in Taiwan run on Hitachi Travelstar 2.5-inch hard disk drives.

“As the center of gravity for notebook PC innovation and production, Taiwan is a very impor

tant region for Hitachi,” said Morse Chen, Taiwan country manager, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.

Taiwanese manufacturers point to four key reasons in consistently choosing Hitachi Travelstar drives over competitive products for their notebook storage component namely technology leadership, breadth of product line, quality, reliability, maturity of design architecture and supply, support and service.

“Our customers here in Taiwan demand the best that storage technology has to offer and that has been a welcomed motivator for pushing our own hard drive research and advancements. Because of this, our Taiwan relationships are ones we value beyond the pure business transactions they bring,” Chen added.
