VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, a category of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls

Gone are the days when there was no choice but to pay hefty telephone bills. But with the introduction of the VoIP the users stay connected to anywhere in the world at a fraction of cost.

What is VoIP
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, a category of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls.

VoIP allows making telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of using a regular analog phone line. While some services work only over the computer or a special VoIP phone, other services allow using a traditional phone through an adaptor.

What it can do
The VoIP users regardless of the location in the world can send receive calls with the help of the internet and the costs would be minimal.

The phone messages get forwarded to a computer as e-mail attachments. It is possible to archive phone messages and conversations as electronic files on the computer. And a

ll these with great features like call waiting/ forwarding, voicemail and three-way calling at no extra charge.

How does it Work
The VoIP converts the voice signal from telephone into a digital signal that travels over the Internet and then converts back at the other end, so one can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. The most common way VoIP works is that the end user establishes a hi-speed broadband connection, a router and a VoIP gateway. Instead of a standard telephone line, the router sends the telephone calls over an internet connection.

A VoIP gateway converts the analog signals into digital format, which are further broken down into smaller chunks called 'packets', before sending it over the internet, much like the way data is transmitted to and from the computer. These packets are sent to their final destination and instructions for bringing back into an understandable form are embedded in them. The packets are finally reach at the end-user VoIP ga

teway where the packets are reconverted into the original analog format utilizing a PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), thereby routing the call to the number the caller has dialed blending old school technology and hi-tech delivery in a seamless and instantaneous way.
