Taiwan's Acer Inc. ranked as the No. 6-selling notebook PC brand in mainland China market in the fourth quarter of 2005, with a sales volume of 57,000 units, according to International Data Corp. (IDC)With the introduction of a new distribution policy copied from its European operation, Acer's notebook PC sales in the huge mainland China market enjoyed unprecedented growth in the fourth quarter of last year. Acer sold more than 50,000 units in one quarter for the first time, helping the company jump to No. 6 in notebook sales in the mainland from a position outside the top 10 in the previous quarter

Industry sources said that Acer's new distribution mode in China totally discarded its previously established network of provincial-level distributors in favor of cooperation with national-level sales chains such as Ingram Micro (the world's largest information technology distribution chain and an Acer partner in the U.S. market) and Digital China (China's No. 1 computer, communicati

on, and consumer electronics distribution chain)

Acer, however, suffered some labor pains in restructuring its operation in China during the third quarter of last year, when the company's sales volume sharply declined to only 23,000 units, not only dropping off the top-10 list but also falling behind BenQ of Taiwan

Industry sources said that if everything goes smoothly, Acer has the chance to become one of the top-five notebook PC brands in China in the first quarter this year, which was also the goal previously announced by Acer president J.T. Wang
