Owning to its better storage capabilities and greater efficiency is pushing the enterprise and SMEs to opt for SSDs based storage systems.
As there is an ever growing increase in demand for high end storage, SSDs based storage strategy is gaining ground among the SMEs as well as very small enterprise customers.
If we take a closer look at SSDs and HDDs, the performance feature of NAND-based SSDs is one of the more obvious differentiations between the two technologies. As it is, SSDs have no mechanical framework to move and hence provide random data read access times that are significantly faster than those of HDDs. This is perhaps the biggest wining point in factor of SSDs.
Even though, one of the other dissimilarities and possibly the most misunderstood difference between these two storage technologies comes to the fore when we look at device-level reliability and endurance, or the life span of the storage device an enterprise or SME user can expect when reading and writing data on tot the storage device.
Talking about this perspective, SSD reliability and endurance are impacted by a number of factors that are different from those that impact HDDs. Enterprise and SME end customers and system designers must understand the parameters that influence device longevity and reliability of the overall SSD segment and is making it a big hit among the enterprise segment.
Pure storage characteristics such as NAND component endurance, increases the efficiency between the data written to the NAND media and the data received from the host or write multiplication/reduction factors, this also decided on how efficiently the data is spread over all cells in the NAND media, among other factors.
To lay the groundwork for understanding SSD component- and device-level reliability and endurance, we can take a closer look at the underlying NAND storage media and its intrinsic properties that impact endurance and reliability. And we would have a clear understanding about the winners that lie inside SSDs.
We can also examine SSD architectures and a few of the techniques used to manage data written to and read from NAND in a typical SSD. There is a great deal of importance for storage device vendors towards defining a common set of metrics to characterize solid state storage and this is where SSDs are set to score over other storage alternatives. And moving forward, more and more enterprise set of users are likely to go with the SSD choice as the future lies here.
