An ultimatum of 30 days has been given to civic authorities to clear the area of unauthorized hawkers to make it congenial for conducting business.
In an unprecedented peace protest organised by all the major Nehru Place Associations today, nearly 2000 shops, retailers and offices remained shut to jointly assert their right for a cleaner, safer and a regulated environment to conduct business in the Nehru Place commercial area.
Led by Nehru Place Improvement and Welfare Association (NIWA) President Anil K Sehgal, stakeholders and retailers from Nehru Place collected in large numbers near Bajaj House 97, to be a part of the Nehru Place Bachao Andolan and show their solidarity to this cause. The Presidents of all the 4 associations - Mahinder Aggarwal, President, All Delhi Computer Traders Association (ADCTA), HR Sahni, President, Export Fabric Suppliers Association (EFSA), Puneet Singhal, President, Computer Media Dealers’ Association (CMDA) and R.K. Malhotra, President, Progressive Channels Association of Information Technology (PCAIT) were present during the protest and they agreed to maintain pressure on the authorities in the coming weeks and months. They sought authority to provide and improve facilities of the Nehru Place Commercial area in the presence of around 500 occupants who gathered there.
“We shall continue to ask for the pride of place that Nehru Place had come to deserve as a commercial hub adding Rs. 1000 crore annually to the government revenues,” asserted Anil Sehgal, President, NIWA in his speech. “The working group of the ‘Nehru Place Bachao’ will continue to bring up issues with various bodies till they are completely resolved, both in letter and spirit.
Nearly 12,500 people, engaged in 1283 businesses and offices in Nehru Place who earlier took part in the signature campaign, stayed away from work and participated in the peaceful protest. The otherwise bustling shopping market on other days wore a deserted look today as most of the shops remained closed during the first half.
Early this week, the steering committee formed for taking up this cause has also approached the Lt. Governor of Delhi, Shri Tejendra Khanna through a memorandum to apprise him about the deteriorating condition of the famous IT Hub.
