HDD Shortage to Continue in 2012

Posted on January, Tuesday 10, 2012 By Jalaj Roy Choudhury

The year 2012 was a major upset when it comes to PC shipment. There was an exorbitant decline in the PC shipment owing to a HDD supply shortage. There was a considerable shortage of HDDs in 2011 from HHD players like Seagate and that is why ITVar News tried to find out the reason behind this with Seagate and also to know about the scenario of HDD market in 2012.

Enquiring about the current HDD market status with Vibhor Agarawal, Director (Marketing), Supertron Electronics Ltd. we came to know that the shortage of HDD still persists in the market though there is no further hike in the prices of HDD. On being asked about when the situation is bound to get normal, he said, “We are not in a position to answer this thing as we are not updated by the vendors on this. The vendor is in a better position to answer this question”.

ITVar News took the whole matter further to the Vendor (Seagate) and managed to get the response from the Company. When we questioned with Seagate that there was a shortage in supply of HDD in 2011, which in turn hampered the shipment of PC business? Is this still the case or is the situation back to normal, it was informed by Seagate that the Company expects the shortage to continue for some time. Moreover, the company continues to believe that during calendar 2012 unit demand will exceed supply and combined with the high growth rate in the demand for raw storage, the exabyte shortage will be more pronounced than the unit shortage, and as a result pricing is expected to remain stable.

Just stay tuned to ITVar News and we will keep you posted on how things shape up and whether the HDD supply meets demand or not?
