Virtualization Pushing the Education Envelope

Posted on December, Monday 19, 2011 By itVAR News Network

Over the past many years, the education segment has enjoyed a highly volatile technological ride, especially in the wake of rapid advancements within the personal computer domain and as the personal computer, laptop or now tablet has moved from being a status symbol to a mainstay of classrooms around the world.

Even though it is new to schools and education system, the concept of virtualization is proving to be billed as the next big thing in the business and consumer world within the education realm.

As a definition virtualization is a methodology for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications or end users interact with those resources.

And in fact when you access internet based applications like google maps on your handset, you are using virtualization. As a universal concept virtualization has a number of broad implications and this concept can be applied to devices, servers, operating systems, applications and even networks.

As the details can be technical and abstract, on the other hand virtualization can have a big impact on the overall usage of technology within an educational driven system or sub-systems. Firstly there is operational efficiency cost advantage attached with it. And the second aspect comes in the form of academic benefits.
Driving the concept of virtualization, a virtual computer is a logical representation of a computer in software. By decoding the physical hardware from the operating system, the concept of virtualization provides more operational flexibility and increases the utilization rate of the underlying physical hardware.

Even though experts firmly believe that virtualization can be implemented primarily at the software level, many modern microprocessors techniques now include hardware features explicitly designed to improve the efficiency of the virtualization process in general.

As we move ahead virtualization is sure to play a very important and impactful role within the education system and remodel ways, methodologies and change the way we look at modern education today.
