Enterprise Looking at Application Grid for IT Consolidation

Posted on December, Saturday 10, 2011 By itVAR News Network

Single vendor logistics and single window technology adoption is paving the way towards Application Grid Adoption in India.

This is a fact that today’s economic condition is pushing a number of enterprise IT organizations to consolidate and look for reducing the numbers of technology vendors of different technologies in order to reduce the resources used by those technologies within their data centers. In such a scenario, introduction of application grid is set to serve this purpose for the enterprise segment.

Consolidation at different levels means different things at different levels: it can be reducing the number of physical servers to run a given workload, or it can be combining multiple data stores into a single larger storage facility. Additionally it can also be the replacement of a number of application sets of redundant functionality with a single all-encompassing solution.

Consolidating or reducing the number of vendors of a given technology can significantly improve efficiency by streamlining operations. For example, if an IT shop has more than one type of application server, each will have its own update schedule, patching procedures, and management practices. Consolidating to a single application server will bring simplification and economies of scale to each of these activities.

Consolidating or reducing the amount of resources used by a given technology brings near-linear reduction along many dimensions: the labor associated with management activities mentioned above, problem diagnosis, energy usage, etc.

This type of consolidation can be done in a number of ways, including use of technologies that can be more efficiently utilized underlying resources as well as technologies that can be scaled to multiple levels with need rather than statically provisioned for the expected worst case scenarios.

Coming at the right time, application grid is an emerging set of architecture for application server-level infrastructure that is ideally suited for consolidation purpose. Moving forward, more and more enterprise set of customers in India are set to look at Application Grid in order to achieve more from their set of vendors and stay put on a growth path.
