Convergence Driving Government towards all IP Era

Posted on December, Saturday 10, 2011 By itVAR News Network

Convergence of multiple level of devices, form factors and technologies is driving the government segment to adopt all IP driven networking systems.

Convergence of devices and technologies is prompting, globally as well as in India, government agencies and departments to move forward with their efforts of converging voice, data, and video services onto a common IP infrastructure. The main force behind this accelerated transition to IP networks is a realization of the efficiency and cost savings from running multiple applications and services across a single infrastructure.

However, for some time to come there will still be non-IP applications present through government organizations due to the large installed base of circuit-based equipment and infrastructure within government and military networks. Looking forward for several years, many organizations will continue running parallel networks of circuit-based and packet-based traffic to help meet mission-critical requirements for both military and civilian personnel.

The migration towards an Everything over IP (EoIP) infrastructure is occurring today, and the government segment is seriously looking at going in for an all IP networking focused infrastructure.

Experts close to the industry believe that circuit-based technology is being widely used within government organizations today, but the government IT decicion makers are considering transporting Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) applications over an IP network, and take a call on how Circuit to Packet (CTP) solutions can empower government organizations everywhere across their deployed legacy IP networks.

Government’s Legacy - Circuit-Based Technology

If we talk about telecommunications arena, a circuit switching network is one that establishes a dedicated circuit between nodes and terminals. Each of these circuits is dedicated for that session and cannot be used by other applications until the circuit is released and a new connection is set up. Thus, a network architecture like this has a lot of technology related limitations that need to be overcome fast.

Hence, early government telephone systems are a suitable example of circuit switching. However, in later years it became possible to multiplex multiple connections over the same physical conductor. And moving forward, the convergence era of multiple devices, form factors and cutting edge technologies is pushing the government segment towards an all IP era.
