Social services typically include of creating mobile Internet portals where members can find and connect with past colleagues or new acquaintances based on common interests. They usually interact by blogging text, photos and videos to a personal site, and then communicating via IM, SMS, or email etc.
Despite appearing as focused services, they have proven to be fundamental communication vehicles that even people with very little disposable income are willing to pay for. One of the biggest successes is Facebook Mobile with over 50 Million members and growing at 200% annually. Facebook Mobile has extended its dominant wireline Internet services to the mobile world as well. It is being deployed by over 150 operators worldwide, including many in emerging markets, and many of the largest in the world: e.g. Telefonica, Vodafone, AT&T, etc. Similarly Blackberry services are quite successfully moved from an elite segmented service to a service desired by the common man.
There are many other successful mobile social networking sites, both on portal and off-portal. These sites typically follow a similar blog & chat format, while periodically offering additional services, like multiplayer gaming communities, and virtual worlds where people can interact. All this is seriously playing a vital role for the operator community in order to push for the 3G services and application intake.
In addition to social networking focused advertising, many of these sites obtain revenue from selling virtual goods (like website decorations), electronic goods (like ringtones, music and videos), and physical goods. Whether it is a social networking website or a telecom operator, the amalgamation of social networking on the mobile world is creating a win-win situation for both the parties. The ability to easily find members with similar interests/affiliations is also essential as is providing a full set of collaborative communication tools for the end customer.
Moving forward, social networking is set to play a more critical role in terms of connecting the unconnected and revitalizing the communications infrastructure for the common masses.
