Servers at the helm of Enterprise

Posted on October, Saturday 01, 2011 By itVAR News Network

Not many years back, there was a time when the term "midrange" used to define a very precise segment of the market. In the past, when we talked about low-end servers.

midrange boxes and high-end mainframes, everyone in the IT fraternity knew what we were talking about. However, with the server market opening up a lot today, those days are now over, and the lines of distinction have gotten rather mixed up and there is no clear demarcation left today.

Experts in the industry confirm that today, the situation is such that global vendors whose primary strength is in the midrange, are being squeezed between the increasing capabilities of high-quality desktop systems from the bottom and the decreasing cost of server systems from the high end. Market dynamics and economic situation is driving this trend.

In the past few years, the steady encroachment of souped up x86 boxes, in particular, is reducing the legacy divide between low-end, low-priced white boxes and expensive proprietary midrange systems. And as of late, the combination of dual-core technology and 64-bit architectures are driving this trend.

Consolidation all Around

Most importantly, consolidation is certainly one area that vendors and analysts alike find noteworthy. This consolidation spending is being driven by efficiency gains and next generation ICT technology adoption within the enterprise community.
Different global vendors like IBM and HP have already noticed an accelerated rate of both server and application consolidation among its customers, as well as the continued standardization of IT infrastructure technologies.
This is primarily because of the fact that consolidation and standardization help enterprising CIOs see quicker response to new business requirements due to a reduction in integration efforts and the offer of greater solution availability or choice. Moving forward, enterprise customers are likely to closely look at servers when it comes to consolidation of their IT needs and move ahead on the productivity charts.
