Ethernet – The Networking Technology that Matters

Posted on August, Friday 12, 2011 By itVAR News Network

In today’s demanding universe of connectivity and inter-connectivity, Ethernet technology is fast becoming the de-facto standard and as a result becoming ubiquitous with regards to enterprise customers.

This demand of Ethernet stems from the fact that this connectivity technology brings tremendous savings on account of lowering CapEx as well as OpEx for the enterprise customers.

Several factors have contributed to making Ethernet the most popular network technology in use today. And qualities of Ethernet such as network reliability, availability of management and troubleshooting tools & features, scalability being offered by Ethernet and low cost of deployment as well as low cost of maintenance are some of the qualities that are making this technology the choice of the hour for enterprise customers in India as well as globally.

Ethernet is Reliability
In today’s highly competitive environment, highly reliable networks are critical to the success of the enterprise, so ease of installation and support are primary considerations in the choice of network technology for CIOs. Hence, today, Ethernet networks are rapidly approaching the reliability level associated with its technological ancestors, and this connectivity technology is increasingly becoming easier to understand and administer with very little maintenance cost attached to it.

A Question of Availability

When it comes to network availability and management tools Ethernet has made all this possible with the help of widespread adoption of management standards including Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and its successors, allow an administrator to view the status of all desktops and network elements, including redundant elements, from a central station.
Today, Ethernet troubleshooting tools span a range of capabilities, from simple link indicator lights to sophisticated network analyzers. As a result of Ethernet’s popularity, large numbers of people both from the vendor side as well as the operator side have been trained quite thoroughly on ethernet installation, maintenance and troubleshooting.
Scalability
The super-fast Ethernet standard, approved in the year 1995, made Ethernet as a scalable technology that can be easily taken to accommodate different levels. Now, the development of Gigabit Ethernet, extends the scalability of Ethernet even further. Now Ethernet can rapidly scale from 10 to 100 to 1000 Mbps.

Ethernet Lowers Cost

There has been a rapid overall decrease in the per-port price for Carrier grade Ethernet and Ethernet products, and for shared hub ports, the difference between their costs is coming down rapidly. As India is a price sensitive market, this is perhaps one of the biggest factor that is pushing the hearts and minds of Enterprise customers in India to go all out for Ethernet adoption and Ethernet based services at their network level.
