The company is quite serious on making itself a complete enterprise solution provider.
When Cisco entered the server market two years back, it created a huge roar within the server and storage leaders like Dell, HP and IBM, and soon the latter two improvised their networking turf to take Cisco at par. But Dell’s concentration wasn’t diverted to step on to Cisco’s forte. Things seem to be changing, and Dell, with an eye to transition from a PC company to a complete solution provider, has decided to enter this networking forte.
IBM already had a lineage in the networking hardware sphere, the group which it had sold to Cisco a decade ago, so to re-enter the market didn’t take it much time. The quick grab of Brocade’s Ethernet switching gears to resell was the first attack and then came the much talked about Blade deal. And HP already had a homegrown networking set up, which it gradually enhanced with the acquisition of 3Com, H3C and TippingPoint. So, the only storage leader left was Dell, and the recent talk on Force 10 Networks acquisition shows Dell’s seriousness to brave all its old storage competitors and the new ones in the networking forte.
The acquisition of Force10's data center switches will bolster Dell’s own data center server and storage range. Force10 convincingly leads in high-performance, high-density switches for data centers and high-performance computing environments. The company’s latest developments include data center core and top-of-rack switches specifically manufactured to deal zettabytes of data with 40/100Gbps Ethernet interfaces. Dell believes Force10's Open Cloud Networking strategy, which emphasizes automation and virtualization based on open standards, will complement its own Virtual Era design philosophy.
However, with the acquisition Dell may end its long OEM strategy under which it was reselling Brocade’s networking gearing with its own label. As with Force 10, Dell’s network capabilities will spur. The company is determined to keep the Chennai office of Force10 and also boost the channel relationships for a vibrant footprint in the sphere. Ofcourse, now it’s all on time to see how far Dell fairs to take on the giants in the field.
