HP Goes Strong on ‘Green’

Posted on June, Wednesday 08, 2011 By itVAR News Network

According to Greenpeace Green Electronics report HP is now among the top 5 vendors (number one in desktop and laptop vendor) to lower toxic chemicals, recycling and climate change. Today, HP is taking a lot of initiative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission so that the company can achieve the target of 20% reduction in GHG emission by 2013 from 2005 level.

For this HP has two fold approach, one is helping out customers to reduce energy-intensive and carbon-heavy processes in which the global IT industry is responsible for 2% of the total GHG emission but HP believe that the industry will definitely be prominent in reducing energy- intensive and carbon-heavy process. Another approach is reduction of HP’s carbon foot print through the use of renewable energy, energy efficient operations, manufacturing, smart packaging and transport.

Apart from this HP is very conscious about the materials they use in the product and their environmental performance so they keep on removing substances of concern from their product and for this reason a lot of money is being spent every year. According to Annukka Dickens, Environmental Manager, HP Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) “More than 50 environmental product stewards globally work with design teams to decrease the impact of our products across their life cycles including materials and energy use in manufacture, packaging and distribution, energy and resources (such as paper) consumed during use, and materials recovery at end of life. We also ensure that all our products are recycling friendly and hence use materials that enable this objective.”

She also remarked, “Green computing at HP represents an environmentally responsible way to reduce power and environmental waste. At HP, Green Computing starts with innovation in our labs, by designing environment friendly products that use smart materials, packaging (98 percent recyclable packaging) to help customers across segments reduce their carbon footprint.“  HP has made it simpler for its customers go green by addressing energy efficiency, using eco- friendly materials that are recyclable.

HP has also taken a major initiative to educate people about carbon foot print and how to measure it by offering free tools and also by their online HP Carbon Foot Print Calculator which enables the end users to have an estimate on carbon foot print of their HP computing and printing products.

The company is also concentrating on renewable energy sources along with energy efficiency improvements that will HP to put a step closer to a green IT.  In 2010 approximately 311 million kWh of renewable energy were purchased which is equivalent to over 8% of the overall electricity use in their facilities.
This is in addition to the renewable energy available by default in the power grid, and achieves our goal for 2012 ahead of time. HP is committed to maintain the proportion of renewables in energy mix through 2012. To do so, they are securing renewable energy contracts, exploring opportunities with providers of wind and solar power, and participating in green energy programs.
