We present nine ways to embracing Green and growing with the environment,s companies resort to play their part in minimizing the global carbon footprint.A, it becomes essential to start from home and on the same line Tech Mahindra too has laid its green foundation across its processes.
From process improvisation point to reduce carbon footprint, there are continuous efforts to implement various green efficient solutions. In a recent interaction with Sandeep Chandna, Associate Director of Tech Mahindra, he reveals the numerous ways they are trying to make the company, environment effective.
1. Monitoring tools: We are always on a lookout at opportunities to save and conserve energy wherever possible. We use various scalable and modular systems so that our energy utilization is optimal. In addition, we have effective monitoring tools that help us track our energy utilization performance. We have automated lighting systems using occupancy sensors.
2. Choosing the right products: In terms of choosing a solution or product that is eco-friendly, it is very important to look what would happen to the product at the end of its life cycle. There has to be a buyback option for the product from the vendor. All the products and equipments must have the requisite government energy certifications and standards. One should buy the products which follow Environmental Conscious Manufacturing/Production.
We are leveraging technology to ensure optimal usage of electricity, lights, air conditioning, and power. For example, sensors are deployed to automatically turn off lights & ACs when employees are not at their desks. Due to these initiatives, there has been an observed considerable reduction in terms of energy consumption.
Our Infrastructure policies ensure equipment optimization, such as servers, routers, printers; PCs, etc. are tuned and/or configured to use less power, cooling, and floor space. We attempt to use fewer servers, by way of server consolidation, which in turn reduces the usage of power in our data center. We also employ PC hibernation and have procedures or policies for powering down devices when they are not in use. We mostly procure Green PCs.
3. Process optimization: Besides, our solutions target optimization of hardware, minimum usage of paper, virtualization and server consolidation, space management, travel reduction wherever possible. At Tech Mahindra, carbon management strategy and planning is an ongoing activity and is audited regularly.
4. Traditional measures: In addition to the above Green IT initiatives, there is big focus on traditional sustainability principles like usage of renewable energy using wind and solar for generating electricity, rainwater harvesting system as well as a sewage treatment plant. Our landscaping is efficiently planned to create green zones and we use rainwater and recycled water for irrigation.
5. Car-Pooling: Tech Mahindra also encourages its employees to use car pooling – we have a dedicated car pooling website called ‘ODYSSEY’ to enable TechMighties to car pool to work.
6. E-Waste strategy: We extend ourselves to community-based Green Initiatives, by way of ensuring awareness and education amongst our suppliers through our Supply Chain management policies. We consciously make an effort to not add our eWaste to existing landfills, by having suppliers for eWaste removal and recycling for us.
Beyond its own processes, the company has egged on various conducts and sustainability projects to educate and contribute equally to the society.
7 SCCM Code of Conduct: Tech Mahindra has also undertaken the Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) Code of Conduct which applies to all of Tech Mahindra’s suppliers, vendors and companies who supply us with products and services. This code of conduct is aimed at enhancing the awareness of carbon emissions and empowering people to reduce their carbon footprint.
8 Active participation in environment-friendly projects: Sustainability projects and reports like the Carbon Disclosure Project, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The ‘Green Marshals’ team at Tech Mahindra undertakes series of green IT initiatives like effective e-waste management, Smart meters, carbon footprint monitoring etc., that help in raising the bar for green IT practices at Tech Mahindra.
9 Green Programs: Green initiatives are very simple and many times just require change in processes with minimal or no new investment. The key is to make the whole organization aware and excited about these initiatives. In our opinion something like green walkathon, green Valentine’s Day, green rock shows etc., are good initiatives to connect to the young brigade in the organization.
This year we want to spread message of “Commit to green” from “Go Green”. We are celebrating environment day across locations, our plans include saplings and eco-friendly items sale for employees by the physically challenged, online green pledges, sale of fuel efficiency enhancer products, organizing green awareness talks & screening films and green ribbon distributions
