While sharing his views with IT VAR News, Ramkumar Subramanian, Vice President, AMD India talks on issues with Intel and strategies after settlement
ITVN: Kindly throw some light on what was the dispute between Intel and AMD? How company has reached to the final solution with Intel?
RS: In 2005, AMD filed an antitrust lawsuit against Intel in the US stating that Intel engaged in illegal business practices, which intentionally blocked AMDs access to the market. Intel had, unlawfully, maintained a monopoly in the market for x86 processors. Intel and Advanced Micro Devices have now settled all antitrust litigation and intellectual property disputes. This agreement ends the legal disputes and enables AMD to focus on product innovation and development.
ITVN: What impact will AMD get after the settlement?
RS: As per the terms of the agreement AMD and Intel will o
btain patent rights from a new five-year cross license agreement, and will give up any claims of infringement from the previous license agreement. Under the agreement GLOBALFOUNDRIES will continue to manufacture products for AMD. The agreement also creates level playing field in competitive markets which allows products to compete on their own merits, and the consumers everywhere will have the ability to choose the best products available for purchase that meet their needs. With compelling products likeAMD Fusion processor family and VISION merchandising program, accesses to customer demand and a winning business model, AMD is poised for success.
ITVN: What benefits will your partners and you get after the settlement?
RS: The terms of agreement allows the OEMs to expand their products base offering more choices to the consumer. With the new agreement OEMs can now continue to enjoy benefits from Intel even if elect to use AMD micro
processors thus offering a fair chance to both AMD and Intel products in market. Both these resolutions will benefit the partners in terms of expansion for their business.
ITVN: What would be your roadmap and strategies now to expand AMD in India?
RS: This is a historical agreement as it marks the beginning of a new era for AMD since it allows products to compete on their own merits, and the consumers hence forth will have the ability to choose the best products available which suit their needs. This agreement also clears AMD path to create a flexible business model and vigorous competition with Intel which will benefit the consumers.
ITVN: Share some plans for coming Fiscal?
RS: AMD believes that there is a significant potential in the government, education, consumer and rural markets in the country. The present government has laid out several new initiatives to bring the b
enefits of ICT into education and the rural economy. This combined with the thrust in the consumer market, provide an ideal market for AMDs products. In addition, there is tremendous potential for our graphics products in the traditional areas of gaming and the growing market of workstations graphics.
