Lenovo becomes official computing supplier for Olympic gamesPosted Monday, March 26, 2007 By Manjari JunejaLenovo, the world’s third largest computer maker, has announced that it is the exclusive computing equipment supplier for the Beijing 2008 Olympic games. Virtually every aspect of the management of the Games, from gathering and storing participant data to displaying the scores to organizing all Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games (BOCOG) activities, will depend on the hardware provided by Lenovo. The company also announced that it has completed the second of three massive hardware deliveries for the Beijing 2008 Olympic games with the shipment of nearly 700 pieces of hardware, including notebooks, desktops, desktop monitors and servers, to the Integration Test Center of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG). When asked why Lenovo has chosen to sponsor Beijing 2008 Olympic games, Vice President, Olympic Marketing, Lenovo, Alice Li said, “The Olympic games represent goodwill, excellence and global unity. An estimated four million television viewers will watch the event and this will help Lenovo in brand building and showcase our technology to the world. It will also give us business opportunities with properties and their partners and help us reach from C-level officers to consumers.” Lenovo has already devoted significant times, resources and product to the 2008 Olympic games. More than 30 Lenovo staffers are working at the 800-square-meter integration lab in downtown Beijing. The company is now running test at the integration test center with various partners configuring the equipment for use in the upcoming test events that begin in July 2007 and end only weeks before the games begin on August 08, 2008. As of March 27, the start of the 500-day countdown to the games, Lenovo will provide BOCOG with approximately 300 servers, 800 desktop computers, 800 computer monitors and 70 notebook computers. By the time the games commence Lenovo will deliver more than 14 thousand pieces of computing equipment to support 56 venues in seven cities, including 39 competition venues and 17 data centers and BOCOG centers. As the 500-day countdown begins, Lenovo will be launching an advertising and marketing campaign throughout China, intended to further strengthen the emotional bond between the Olympic games and the Lenovo brand. “These events will tell millions of Chinese citizens that the countdown to the games has begun and that Lenovo will be with them along the way to provide a unique and memorable experience. We have been working on the plans to roll out marketing campaigns globally when closer to the games, and preparing the Olympic games on-site projects such as internet lunges, showcasing, hospitality etc. we are in full speed for preparations,” added Li. The vendor will also market surge corresponds to geographic interest level, selecting Lenovo Champions in key countries to act as ambassadors, inviting customers to see the technology showcase at the games and continuing partnerships with fellow worldwide sponsors including Visa and Coca-cola. Lenovo will also operate and staff seven internet lounges in the Olympic villages which will help athletes, trainers, coaches to email, socialize and interact with families, friends and fans. It has also recently completed 1000 city road show that helped company reach small towns in China and target around 2 million citizens. These roadshows provided first PC experience to thousand of Chinese and helped company to bring Olympic games to cities outside Beijing. The company intends to follow this success with similar kind of road shows targeted at Small and Medium Business Customers and reach out to approximately 200 mid and large sized Chinese cities.
